OOCL Kaohsiung is on its final leg to Singapore, from Sri Lanka. As such, it’s out of range of AIS network probably until it hits the Straits of Malacca. I was snooping around Singapore and looked up at Sembawang Shipyard, where I sometimes kayak. Some US Navy ships there (Water Diehl, which once machine-gunned some Iranian speedboats). But another, more mysterious, ship, the Tippicanoe, too. It says its destination is “Groundhog Day”. Googling it doesn’t give much either, although the purported photo looks like an oiler. My neighbor works for the USN, so maybe he’d know.

Oh no wonder my ship went missingPosted by: Michael Slater in Uncategorized, tags: ais, oocl kaohsiungI thought that AIS Ship Tracking was satellite based. Nope, it’s VHF. The most powerful transmitters broadcast at 12W only. And the AIS protocol doesn’t seem to do any kind of message passing ship-to-ship-to-ship….-to-ground. So I presume it’ll show up tomorrow in Colombo when it’s back in range of the AIS receivers.

To Jeddah in fourteen hours, إن شاء اللهPosted by: Michael Slater in Uncategorized, tags: oocl kaohsiung
I must say, tracking this ship as it relatively speeds around the globe in such an efficient way makes me curious to take a freighter cruise sometime. I think it would be a lot more fun than a Carnival Key Party Cruise. OOCL Kaohsiung is already finished with its dropoff and now it’s headed to Portsaid — the northern end of the Suez Canal. Move it, baby! ….now She is running along the coast north of Skikda, Algeria.

With the mountains of Calabria to the east…Posted by: Michael Slater in Uncategorized, tags: oocl kaohsiungThe OOCL Kaohsiung (last spotted three days ago?!) is off Halifax arriving in Singapore on September 19. I should clarify… this is the ship carrying my container full of tools and books from the USA. I suppose Mom would refer to it as a Treasure Galleon. Lord knows it was hard to convince her to properly submit the paperwork so that it could be sent on its Final Journey. |
