It’s been a while since I had to fuss with Windows. I had the absolute classic Windows experience to remind me how horrible it is.

Install Parallels on my mac. This takes, perhaps, five minutes.

Now it’s time to install the Windows virtual machine inside Parallels.

I think approximately 90 minutes and, probably more than six reboots later, I finally have installed windows, installed the patches, installed the service packs, installed patches on the service packs, and replaced Explorer with Firefox. So so so so tedious.

Anyway, now I have AVR Studio as well as WIN-AVR, the avr-gcc for Windows.

I gave it a really simple fragment of a program and tried to simulate it inside an AtTiny2313v. Looks like it kind of worked, but I need to figure out how to use the debugger better. I was sort of tired of the whole thing by now, and didn’t work too hard at it.

It didn’t help that I can’t get the function keys to work properly inside the windows VM. I looked around on the web and found various “solutions” that weren’t. I don’t have an Fn key on this mac wireless keyboard. And the option about “Use the F1-F12 keys to control software features” simply doesn’t exist as an option for me under keyboard/mouse options. How can I use the Function keys inside Windows VM? The manual for parallel was even spotty.
