I reread DUNE during my little flight-to-freedom.
I found it remarkably good. Absolutely gripping and captivating. I nearly read it in a single sitting.
I first read Dune sometime during high school. But I recall almost nothing about it, and I definitely don’t remember being moved by it. (Like I was with ‘Ender’s Game’). The prose and story requires a high level attention to detail; it’s dense.
Now I’m kicking myself for not buying the subsequent novels. There are actually many more, and I figure at some point the series Jumps the Shark, but at the least the next one or two might have some worth.
I also recall that we watched the movie, Dune, in the theatres. I just remember everyone laughing about “surfing the giant sandworms” and something involving “heartplugs”.
Wikipedia distilled some choice reviewer remarks about the worthless movie.
“Several of the characters in Dune are psychic, which puts them in the unique position of being able to understand what goes on in the movie” and explained that the plot was “perilously overloaded, as is virtually everything else about it.”
